Les réactions inflammatoires et oxydatives provoquées par divers agressions (UV, méthodes d’épilation agressives, Ingrédients chimique irritants de certains déodorants, frottement constant avec les vêtements serrés …), engendre la production de radicaux libres et une accumulation de mélanine d’où l’hyperpigmentation.

L’apport de substances antioxydantes peut renforcer la défense face à ces altérations tout en les inhibant ou les ralentissant. Les antioxydants agissent en neutralisant directement les radicaux libres, en réduisant la concentration de peroxydes, en réparant les membranes oxydées et en limitant la production des espèces réactives d’oxygène. Une étude a montré que les extraits de zeste de citron possèdent une activité antioxydante similaire à celle des antioxydants synthétiques.
